GIG CHAIRMAN PRAISES THE LOCAL COUNCIL

The Chairman of the World Pilot Gig Championships Committee has reserved special praise for the Council of the Isles of Scilly in helping to organise the event this year.

Upgrades to the electricity and waste supplies were required for Health & Safety and Environmental Health purposes.

The electricity supply in The Tunnel, the area occupied by the organisers on The Strand, is now connected to the islands’ main cable while the toilets are now connected to the sewers.

Rick Persich said, “I know it’s fashionable to hammer the Council but Helen Pearce and Eddie Williams worked incredibly hard.

“Although we are paying for some it, the Council oversaw it and done it brilliantly and all on time.”

Asked if the event can get any bigger he said “Whatever gigs get here we can we can put on the start line and race but eventually accommodation on the islands will limit it because the crews won’t have anywhere to stay.”

“We have room for a few more yet so we’ll solider on.”
