Last year children from the Tresco-Bryher Base of Five Islands School raised £1,500 to sponsor a guide dog, which they named Samson, and last week they got the chance to meet him.

A wonderful welcome with banners and balloons awaited Samson who wasted no time getting to know the children.

Last year the school hosted two afternoon tea and cake sales, where the children dressed as puppies and sold puppy cakes to visitors. Some children also completed a sponsored silence, painted and sold pebbles to tourists and sold pieces of school art.

Tresco-Bryher Base Leader Susanna Gates said: “Raising funds to name, sponsor and meet your own guide dog puppy has been such a rewarding and meaningful activity for all of us here at the school. We had the support of all the children staff, parents, community and visitors who helped make our dream come true.”

It was the first time a guide dog had been sponsored so far west in the country and the children wrote letters to the Steamship Company and Tresco Estate who provided free travel and accommodation so Samson could visit.

Susanna added: “Samson will begin his formal guide dog training aged 14 months. We are really proud of him and the difference he is going to make to someone's life.”
