A record number of 313 exotic plant species in bloom were recorded at Tresco Abbey Garden’s annual New Year’s Day flower count.
RECORD NUMBER OF FLOWERS IN BLOOM ON TRESCO
The plants, which include South African protea, Australian banksia and echium from the Canary Islands, would be unseen elsewhere in the UK owing to Tresco Abbey Garden’s unique microclimate
Curator Mike Nelhams, Head Gardner Andrew Lawson and a team of horticultural students completed the annual count, a tradition dating back 150 years.
Mike said: "It's great to see the garden thriving, especially as many other British gardens look much less colourful during the winter months.
"We're very fortunate to house such a varied, exotic array of sub-topical plants that you'd usually only see in flower overseas at this time of year."
