ISLANDERS DISTURBED BY 4.30AM FIREWORKS

St Mary's residents have complained that fireworks were let off at around 4.30am on New Year's Day.

The pyrotechnics, released from the vicinity of the Mermaid, went on for around ten minutes.

One local wrote on Facebook: "At 4.30am 2017 there were fireworks in Hugh Town!...don't think I was dreaming."

Another wrote: "Who gets the £5000 fine and 6 months imprisonment for the illegal 0438hrs fireworks display then?"

Environmental Health Officer David Currie was informed and the police are investigating the disturbance.

The Star Castle hotel set off its fireworks shortly after midnight.

It is illegal to release fireworks after 1am at New Year.
