A 16-year-old from St Mary's has been named Women's Player of the Year in the Crabbie's National Rugby Awards.

Tara Hitchens, who plays for Isles of Scilly RFC, was presented with the prize at a ceremony in Twickenham yesterday.

The award is for the best club player, "who has performed brilliantly, led her team to league or cup victory, scored a vast number of tries/points or in some other way deserves recognition".

The nominees list included World Cup winners and national players with 50 caps for their country.

Tara said on receiving the award: "I'm just overwhelmed, absolutely overwhelmed. I'm so thankful to everyone who's helped me out."

She added that she would love to play rugby for England in the future.

The Crabbie's National Rugby Awards are designed to honour the achievements of the thousands of rugby clubs across the country.
