A new gallery is to open in the centre of Hugh Town in September.

Tamarisk, a mother and daughter venture by Oriel Hicks and Erica Swain, will sell artwork by local artists as well as some from Cornwall and further afield.

Oriel has been creating and selling her own creative glass work for over 25 years from her studio, Phoenix Craft Workshops on the Porthmellon Business Park, while Erica, whose background is in product design, has been designing and selling souvenirs such as tea towels and notebooks from her own unit based at the same location for the past three years.

Together, they have also been sourcing local artwork for the upstairs gallery at the Phoenix Studios for the past few years, which has proved popular with customers. They hope to build on this side of the business with the new gallery, which will be located next to the Island T Shirt Company at the top end of Hugh Street.

Regular artists will include Oriel, Chris Smith, Imogen Bone, Sue Lewington, Vickie Heaney, Rebecca Smith and Sophie Hooper, who will exhibit alongside visiting artists, printers, ceramicists and jewellers.

Oriel and Erica will launch a website with an online shop at some point in the future. In the meantime, you can follow their progress on Facebook ( and Twitter @TamariskScilly.
