LOCAL GIRL RAISING FUNDS FOR COSTA RICAN WILDLIFE
An Isles of Scilly teenager is fundraising to help sloths and monkeys in Costa Rica.
Amy Bagnall, who works at Juliet's Garden restaurant, is off to the Central American country in the New Year to volunteer at an animal rescue centre.
She said: "I found the centre because I couldn't volunteer through any big organisations due to medical conditions so I did an independent search online for animal rescue centres and emailed a few about volunteering with them.
"Bernal, who runs the Costa Rica Animal Rescue Center, came back to me and she was so lovely and welcoming that I decided I'd go to Costa Rica to help her. Her passion for it was just so genuine and she is just a lovely person all round."
Amy, 18, receives weekly updates about the animals and now wishes to raise money for their care before her departure.
She explained: "The centre is a small non-profit making organisation that was started simply because of their passion towards the wildlife and animals of Costa Rica. They recently had to move locations due to over population of the centre and the huge influx of injured and orphaned animals. The move not only disturbed the animals but took a huge chunk out of their savings.
"Before I get there I'd like to help out by doing some fundraising to help with settling in after their move. £500 is enough to build a new enclosure for the monkeys, or enough to feed the sloths for a month. It may not be much money to you but to the animals it's a life changing amount. I would love it if you could join me today in helping such a lovely cause."
Amy hopes to spend at least two months helping out at the rescue centre.
