STRIDE FOR LIFE ATTRACTS BIGGEST TURNOUT
Yesterday's Stride for Life fundraiser on St Mary's was a big success, despite the poor weather.
The ninth annual Cancer Research UK 5K/10K walk/run attracted its biggest turnout yet, with 124 people (and the occasional dog) braving the rain to take part.
Participants met at Holgate's Green for a warm-up with PE teacher Martin Songhurst before setting off at 11am.
Sheila Thomas, who has been organising the race with Beryl Read for the last six years, said: "There was a massive turnout today, despite the weather!"
She thanked the Scillonian Club for its use as a base and Mary Johnson for help with the registration and timing.
Sheila said that the event raised £1,033 on the day, which included a donation of £160 from Sandra Honeychurch from her 60th birthday party, but there won't be a final total until all the sponsorship money in.
She added: "We're totally delighted, it makes all the effort worthwhile."
The results were:
Men 1) Dan Evans in 43.33
2) Jeremy Pearson 3) Matt Whomersley
Ladies 1) Jules Wood in 51.27
2) Lesley Tansey 3) Rhiannon Wallace
Men 1) George Wilkinson in 26.15
2) Mark Thompson 3) Samuel Tansey
Ladies 1) Becky Plummer in 27.12
2) Esme Thompson 3) Celia Hicks
