POKÉMON GO INVADES ISLES OF SCILLY

It looks as if the augmented world has come to Scilly.

A delighted visitor discovered a Pokémon Go character hiding around Buzza Tower yesterday.

A slightly bemused Mr and Mrs Obscura (aka Andrew and Be Combes) said they were very pleased to be part of the Pokémon Go phenomenon but that as they lack smart phones, their only experience of augmented reality outside of the Camera Obscura "comes after a couple of pints in the Atlantic on a Friday night".

Andrew said: "What self-respecting Pokémon character wouldn't want to hang out by the Obscura? We are more than happy to see monster hunters wandering around the tower and of course would also be delighted to share the alternative perspective that is the Camera Obscura and cabinet of curiosities!"

Players have spotted other Pokémon Go characters around Old Town cafe and Porthcressa.

The hugely popular Pokémon Go is a free augmented reality game that challenges users to find and catch Pokémon characters in the real world.

The official website explains: “As you move around, your smartphone will vibrate to let you know you’re near a Pokémon. Once you’ve encountered a Pokémon, take aim on your smartphone’s touch screen and throw a Poké Ball to catch it. Be careful when you try to catch it, or it might run away!”

It is the biggest mobile phone game in US history with millions of users worldwide.
