Four island children are the best tennis squad in the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly region after winning the County School Games finals.

Ruby May, Ashton Littlejohn and Maddie Blackwell, 9, and Coen Hughes, 8, won all their matches in the qualifying rounds before storming to victory in last week's county-wide event.

More than 3,000 children were at Humphry Davey school in Penzance competing in various sports.

Ruby's mum Georgia May said: "They played a number of schools winning every game, then went in to the final matches at about 2pm and stormed through to victory! So they are the best squad in the county, a massive achievement for our island children.

"Their coach Adam May put in loads of hours of his own time training these kids up. His belief in them was inspiring and he coached them to success."

The School Games are an Inter and intra-school competition for young people aged 7-18, made up of four levels of activity: competition in schools, between schools, at county/area level and nationwide.

Georgia added: "We now have the national School Games to think about which looks to be in Loughborough.

"As we have absolutely no funding or help from the school this needs to be looked at in detail to see if it's affordable for parents to escort their children."
