There will be a brief ceremony in Parade Park this Friday to commemorate 100 years since the start of the Battle of the Somme.

Smudge Smith has organised the event, which will be held at the War Memorial at 10am.

There will be an opening prayer by Rev. Charlie Gibbs, followed by the Tryst, a minute's silence, laying of poppies, and a final prayer.

The Somme Offensive, which ran from July 1 to November 18,1916, was fought by British and French armies against the Germans.

More than one million men were killed or injured during the battle, which was the largest on the Western Front during the First World War.
