RECORD NUMBER OF ENTRIES AT DOG SHOW

Today's Isles of Scilly Vet Support Group Dog Show featured a record number of canine entries.

Best In Show was won by Coco, a 2-year-old black Labrador owned by the Bridge family from Scilly.

The event in Old Town featured ten categories including Waggiest Tail and Dog Most Like Its Owner.

However, this year's main attraction, Britain's Got Talent competitor Ruby the Singing Terrier, decided to have a day off and refused to howl the National Anthem for the Best Trick category.

Her owner Chris Sturman said he thought the microphone or heat was responsible for Ruby's silence, insisting that she had never before failed to perform.

"She's never ever let me down, even at the London Palladium," he said. "What can I say? I enjoyed it anyway. We're working on Bohemian Rhapsody next!"

Lloyds Bank manager Dave Stone and his wife Clare had the difficult task of judging the four-legged entrants.

"It's hard to choose, it really is," said Dave. "The hardest one I found was the dog that looked like its owner. You don't know whether you're making them happy or insulting them."

Clare said her favourite category was Best Trick and she was particularly amused by Ruby the Singing Terrier failing to sing.

The Dog Show raises valuable funds for the Vet Support Group's work on the islands, allowing them to buy and maintain equipment as needed. It recently funded an X-ray machine and previously helped finance the new surgery.

MC Kevin Leeman, who has overseen the proceedings for the last several years, said he will miss the event when he leaves the islands with his family later this summer.

"I deliberately went out of my way this year to do a few things I've always wanted to do, like dog/owner lookalike and best trick. My dog Ruby won waggiest tail and it was her last chance to do that, so that was nice.

"There are so many people here and easily more dogs than we've had before. Having a dog myself, I know how important they are to people and I love doing it for that reason."
